WEB 110 Introduction
Hello, my name is Katharine Wilson, but everyone calls me Kat.
I'm lucky enough to make a living pursuing my passion. I design and build historic costumes for film, television and stage. I originally pursued a degree in clothing and textiles with the intention of designing apparel fabrics for the fashion industry. One of the required courses was History of Costume (eww, history, insert groan), I hated history! I'm a visual learner, memorizing names and dates is so NOT my thing. To my amazement, it became my favorite class. All that mumbo jumbo they taught us in high school started falling into place. I was finally able to make connections in history based on the clothing they wore. This was happening over there in that part of the world at the same time that was happening over here. Wow, I actually liked history, who knew? Good thing, because as luck would have it, my theatre major roommate needed a Tudor period costume for class and couldn't thread a needle. We researched the appropriate clothing, went to the thrift store to find drapes and sheets for fabric and I whipped up a fairly accurate costume. I was hooked and decided to change my major right then and there. 20+ years later, I'm still just as passionate as I was then.
